Meat Tenderizer Mexican Ebony
I made a second batch of meat tenderizing mallets after a friend custom ordered a few so naturally I made extras. This mallet is made of Mexican Ebony and PurpleHeart. The head is 3.5 by 4 inches, and the 2 striking faces are a bit more than 6 inches apart. The handle is 6 inches long and has nice rounded corners to form a nice grip. This big chungus comes in just over 1 kilo and will tenderize any meat with ease.
I made some small calculation errors when cutting out the teeth for this mallet. This unfortunately resulted in one row of teeth coming out as super sharp but thin toothpick teeth that would not survive a single hit. For this reason I went ahead and removed that row, giving it a little unique character. The Mexican Ebony also had a desire to crack and tear away, especially at the corners. These areas required some extra love and sanding, adding even more unique character. While I am sure some people would charge extra for this character I am instead offering a small discount.
I used Tightbond 3 woodglue, which is not only water proof but also food safe. I finished all of the hammers with some food safe mineral oil and a light coat of wax to seal everything in. I recommend adding another coat of food safe Mineral Oil every year or 2 depending on usage, or when the wood looses its shinny gleam.
I advise to use the flat striking face most of the time and to reserve the teeth for those really tough cuts of meat. Cleanup can be made easier if the meat(s) are covered with some plastic wrap but I would only do this when using the flat striking face. There is a small chance the teeth could punch little bits of plastic wrap into the meat, which would not be good.
